For the determination of iodine, 500 µL urine was diluted in 4.5 mL 1% tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and filtered using a sterile membrane with a 0.45 µm pore size and a single-use syringe. In most countries, this requirement is met through iodization of table salt, universal salt iodization. Equally important is the role of seaweed-derived iodine in influencing climate cloud formation 11. Iodine, particularly in seaweed-abundant coastal areas, acts as a powerful antioxidant 12 and may contribute via respiration to iodine intake in humans 13. One concern about seaweed consumption is exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, lead, rubidium, silicon, strontium, and tin.176 The contamination of seaweeds with heavy metals depends on habitat or ecology, which has led to inconsistency in research findings.

Unfortunately, many of these symptoms can be confused with other conditions and so tests are often needed for diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Seafoods like fish, shrimp, and shellfish are rich in iodine, which supports thyroid function. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel also help reduce inflammation and support overall thyroid health. How Seaweed Supports Thyroid HealthSeaweed is a rich source of iodine and other nutrients like selenium and zinc, which support thyroid function. A small serving of seaweed can meet or exceed the daily iodine requirement. However, excessive consumption can cause hyperthyroidism due to iodine overload.

One day in 1811, Courtois accidentally added too much sulfuric acid, causing it to release a lovely but mysterious violet-colored vapor. Dried seaweed or seaweed extracts are often found in foodstuffs, and recommendations for safe levels of iodine vary from 20 mg/kg in Germany to 500 mg/kg in the USA and a maximum tolerable level of 100 mg/kg dried weight in Australia 35. In the case of pregnant women and children, the recommendation is to limit brown seaweed to 1 serving per week. However, iodine content can be extremely variable depending on seaweed species, bioavailability, and losses in cooking 31, 32, 36.
